Mission and outreach: Helping others

A cornerstone of the United Methodist Church is reaching out to others. Milton UMC invites you to participate in a number of mission and outreach programs:

Boy Scouts – We sponsor Troop 454 at Milton UMC.

Feeding Families at Christmas – Milton UMC provides Christmas meals to families each December. In collaboration with Milton Community Action.

GIFTS men’s homeless shelter – Milton UMC partners with Janesville-area churches in providing an overnight shelter. We assist with intake, dinners, breakfasts and overnight supervision during two or three weeks each winter. Click here for more.

Housing 4 Our Vets – A collection held in conjunction with our Veterans Dinner helps support veterans in Rock County.

InGathering – Each June, United Methodists around the state are asked to gather contributions to help meet a variety of needs.

Jail ministry – Collecting toys for children whose parents are incarcerated. We have a collection box at Milton UMC throughout the month of November.

Meals on Wheels – Volunteers from Milton UMC help provide home-delivered meals to people in need.

Milton Area Youth Center – Our congregation provides meals to MAYC each month. We also coordinate mentors to volunteer at MAYC anytime. Please contact the church office if you can help support Milton’s youth in this way.

Milton Food Pantry – Through food and money donations and volunteering. Also by donations of school supplies.

Mujila Falls – Our donations and prayers support two projects in the community of Mujila Falls, Zambia: an agricultural sustainability center, and a nutrition program operated by missionary Betty Tshala.

Missions of the United Methodist Women – our active local unit is involved in several special and ongoing mission projects throughout the year

Mitten Tree – Hats and mittens collected at Milton UMC in early December are given to families through Milton Community Action.

MOME clothing exchange – This is an event for the whole family: Moms on a Mission Exchange (pronounced “mommy”). Bring a bag of clothes, take a bag or more. We offer men’s, women’s, teens, maternity and children’s clothing, for free. Open to the public. Offered on the second Saturday of the month, 1 to 3 p.m. (Note: The clothing exchange has been suspended in light of precautions taken for covid-19.)

Nursing homes – A video recording of Sunday worship is given each week to area nursing homes so residents may share in the experience of worshiping God.

Student transportation – Milton UMC helps provide school transportation for homeless students in the School District of Milton.

Summer lunch program – A free lunch is served each weekday throughout the summer. This program, launched in summer 2018, is a project of the One Apple Lunch Bunch of Milton UMC. It involves several community groups and organizations in serving and sponsoring the lunches. During the first two summers, lunches were distributed at a city park. In 2020, the program was adapted to a drive-through pickup, coordinated through the School District of Milton.

The Open Table – a free, monthly community meal on the last Saturday of the month. Volunteers are needed for greeters, set-up, food purchasing, cooks, servers and clean-up. This outreach ministry is intended to involve all members and friends of Milton UMC at some point throughout the year.

Weekend lunch program – A free take-home lunch is distributed to interested students and families in the Milton School District each Friday. This program, launched in January 2019, is a project of the One Apple Lunch Bunch of Milton UMC. Like the Summer Lunch Program, our congregation coordinates several community groups and other churches in serving and sponsoring the lunches.
